Good Dieting Snacks

I trust it is safe to say that everybody likes some sort of snack food whether they are considered good diet snacks or not. Within the food business there is large market segment dedicated to snack foods. It is likely you can walk down any food aisle inside the neighborhood supermarket and notice displays of snack food.

Many of us enjoy snack food because it is normally packaged individually and ready to eat, particularly good any time we are pressed for time in our busy day. I really have a fondness for Haagen-Dazs ice cream. Now my nearby market stocks individual cups of Haagen-Dazs vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. The enticement is to purchase 10 cups and keep them in the freezer for snacking.

While traveling or running errands I usually had some packaged peanut butter or cheese crackers or maybe a "health bar" along with me. I use the past tense because I began to recognize that it was turning into a habit and those snacks were low on nutrition and high in calories. As much as I enjoyed these snacks I was motivated to search for healthier snack food that would help me manage my weight.

So, are there any packaged snacks that are good diet snacks? In looking for healthy snacks you need to be cautious of the health statements on food packages. Snacks labeled "pure" or "natural" does not necessarily make it nourishing. For example, individually packaged "natural" fruit juice drinks and sodas are typically loaded with sugars. Okay, sugar is a natural ingredient but having a lot of sugar can indicate high calories and low nutrition.

One of my favorites was granola bars. So what can be healthier than a granola bar? Granola bars do include vitamins and minerals, but on the average a third of the bar is made up of fats, particularly the harmful trans fats. Examine the package labeling because these types of cereal bars may be high in sugar. Reading food labels is really important in order to find out what you are actually eating. Even those snacks labeled "low-fat" can be high calories when you read the nutrition facts label on the back.

Many of the packaged snacks serve a useful purpose depending on your needs. For instance, when you run or are involved in sports you might need a quick snack for a boost of energy. Even so, when you are dieting you will need to be in control of your calorie intake.

When dieting, or almost anytime for that matter, eating fruits and vegetables are your best bet for good diet snacks. Apple slices in a baggie make a great snack to carry with you (sprinkling them with lemon juice will help them from turning dark). Carrots are a great snack to have with you during your hectic day. Keep them enclosed in a baggie with only a hint of water and they will remain fresh all day.

Making your own trail mix is a good idea because it keeps you in control of the calories and nutritional value. The key to healthy snack eating is to understand the product labels along with finding the nutritional value of fresh fruits and vegetables to determine exactly what it is that you want to put in your body for good nutrition.
