A Different Culture in Paris France

PARIS, FRANCE

Paris is not only the capital, but also it is the largest city of France. It is located on the Seine River, in the northern part of France. The city of Paris has an estimated population around 2,200,000 (as of January 2007), but the metropolitan area in Paris has a population of 11,836,970 (also as of 2007) and is one of Europe's most populated metropolitan areas. In 2009 and 2010, Paris has been ranked among the 3 most influential and important cities in the world, among the first 3 "European cities of the future" (published by Financial Times), and among the top ten cities in the world "places to live in" (British review Monocle June 2010). An important place for more than two millenniums, Paris today, is one of the world's leading cultural and business centers, and its influences in education, science, fashion, media, entertainment, politics, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities, Paris is also among the first 10 wealthiest cities in 2020 and 2025 along with New York City, Sao Paulo, London, Tokyo, and Shanghai.

Paris and the Paris Region, with 552.7 billion (US $813.4 billion) in 2008, produces more than one-fourth of the gross domestic product (GDP) of France. According to 2007 estimations, the Paris urban agglomeration is Europe's biggest city economy and also is the sixth largest in the whole world. The Paris Region hosts around 35 of the Fortune Global 500 companies in several different business districts, like La Defense, the largest purpose-built business district in all of Europe. Paris host several international organizations like the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the informal Paris Club, and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). According to the latest Economist Intelligence Unit survey in 2010, Paris is the world's most expensive city to live in.

Paris started life as the Celto-Roman settlement of Lutetia on the le de la Cit, the island in the Seine, which is currently occupied by the Cathdral de Ntre Dame. Its' current name originates from the dominant Gallo-Celtic tribe in the surrounding region, the Parisii. That is what the Romans called them when they arrived in 52 BCE and established their city Lutetia on the left bank of the Seine, which is now called the "Latin Quarter".
