Why You Can't Lose Weight: TOXINS! (Part 1 of a 3 part series)

We are bombarded with toxic impurities every day! They can lead to poor digestion, weight gain, fatigue, a weakened immune system and more serious health conditions.

How do our bodies take in toxins?

-In the air we breath- We are all familiar with industrial smokestacks, billowing smoke into the air, or exhaust coming from the tailpipes of trucks, and cars, but did you know these facts? We breathe in an average of 3,000 gallons of air daily, 65% of it from indoor air! According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air can have two to five times higher air pollution than outdoor air. Soot, PBDE, phthalates, radon, formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide are just some of the dangerous toxins we breathe into our lungs indoors.

-In the water we consume and bathe in- The tap water from many of our public water systems contain over 700 different types of toxins like mercury arsenic, chlorine, Teflon, and prescription drugs. Over 188 million pounds of chemicals are dumped into the public water systems each year. Every body of water tested for drug residue in the United States finds antibiotics that have built up from human waste and runoff from the waste from farms that treat their livestock with antibiotics and growth hormones. These antibiotics are passed on to fish and other aquatic life and then are passed on to us. Antibiotics can kill off the good bacteria that protect our health by strengthening our immune system. Every time we take a shower or bath, we absorb into our largest organ, our skin, chlorine. When we shower, the chlorine in the steam produced, is converted to the carcinogen chloroform, which we are breathing in!

-In Our Food- Our food today, is genetically modified, sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. We consume many processed foods containing preservatives and chemicals like monosodium glutamate (a food enhancer), which is linked to weight gain and the destruction of brain cells. Artificial sweeteners contained in soda, chewing gum and many other consumable product, such as aspertame, contains methanol and aspartic acid which has been linked to brain cancer. Most brands of toothpaste contain small amounts of saccharin or something similar. Our food today has over 20,000 chemicals added through processing and less than 15% have been tested for what effects they might have on the human body.

How Do Toxins Make You Gain Weight?

When a toxin enters our body, it can destroy or damage our cells, organs and systems. Our bodies use a protective mechanism to stop this from happening. This begins with our liver producing fat to surround the toxin, to keep it from interacting with our bodily functions. This "toxic" fat is stored in our bodies and our percentage of body fat begins to increase. As we increase fat we gain more weight.

This is part of the reason that today over 80% of us are considered overweight and over one third of us are obese. We have all learned that obesity and overweight raises our risks for many other dangerous health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The question is, "Does dieting ever work if we don't pay attention to the fat that we are gaining because of toxins?"
