How to book your holiday for next year

Do you want to get an early start on your plans for the new year by getting a holiday booked up now? Here are 10 steps to booking next year's break.

1. Firstly, think about what time of year you're likely to want to go. This may be dictated by when you or a partner can get time off from work. However, if it's all your choice, think about when you're likely to get busy and when you'll feel the most benefit from some time off.

2. Next, it's time to think about the type of break you'd like to have. This may be all about relaxation, or you could be looking for a little adventure or culture.

3. You now need to decide what your budget it is. This will have a bearing on much of the next few decisions you'll have to make, so work out what you can afford.

4. With your budget and time off in mind, you'll want to decide how long you want to go away for. If it's a city break, then a few days may be enough. Alternatively, seven, 10 or 14 days are usually ideal.

5. Think about what you like doing on holiday. If you like to sit by a beach or pool and relax, destinations like Majorca or Menorca could be perfect for what you need. If you're looking for culture or adventure, then you may prefer somewhere like Holland's Amsterdam or Gdansk in Poland.

6. Once you have a few possible destinations, it's a good idea to do a bit of research on the best resorts for you to stay in. Brochures and online holiday guides may be a good place to start.

7. Now you know where you want to go, you'll need to decide where you want to fly from and then check what flights they have to offer. There are airports located throughout the UK, from big cities through to smaller areas of the country.

8. Next, decide on the type of accommodation you want. This may be bed and breakfast, self catering, full board or something different. Use this to narrow your search for the right hotel or apartment for your holiday.

9. Once you've found some good deals, read up hotel and resort reviews to make sure it's what you're looking for. When you're happy, you can start the booking process.

10. During this stage, you'll get to add on extras such as transfers, insurance airport parking, hire cars and sea views. These may bump the price up a little, but they're probably worth it if it takes the hassle out of sorting them independently.

So, if you're ready to book next year's holiday, it could be time to search for flights to Menorca or flights to Holland, depending on the type of break you have in mind.
