The stunning rain forest is home to many species of animals and plants and is coursed by streams, waterfalls and crystal-clear pools. The upper regions of the mountains contained in the park are populated with dwarfed versions of plant species specially adapted to the wet climate present high in the forested peaks, leading to the nickname of dwarf forest or cloud forest. There are hiking trails throught the park and camping is permitted, though you had better have watertight gear as it is very damp in the park. There are cabins and lodging near the park in the surrounding area.
The bioluminescent bay on the island of Vieques, which lies 8 miles of the coast of the main island, is an amazing place to visit in the dark of a new moon when millions of phosphorescent microorganisms can be seen lighting up the waters with a bluish-green glow. It is possible to view the eerie but spellbindingly beautiful phenomenon by either kayak or by guided boat trips. There is nothing more other-worldly feeling than taking a swim amongst these fascinating and magnificently glowing creatures which respond to motion, creating a quite psychedelic effect.
