Corn Is Beneficial To Children's Intelligent Development

According to long-term research made by many American universities and research institutions, it shows that if children under three years old eat corn congee at breakfast every morning, when they grow up, their academic achievement will be much better than other children.

The institutions conducting this research include the International Food Policy Research Institute, University of Pennsylvania, and Middlebury College. From 1969 to 1977, in Guatemala, researchers let a group of children eat corn congee at breakfast every morning, mixed with skim-milk powder and sugar, while the other group of children drink oatmeal. During 2002 to 2004, researchers returned to Guatemala and collected information from children's test scores. The results showed that the first group of children who ate corn congee at breakfast got higher scores in reading comprehension and nonverbal cognitive tests than the other group.

Corn contains a lot of nutrients. Compared with other staples such as rice and wheat, the content of vitamins in corn is 5 to 10 times more. Every 100 grams of corn can provide nearly 300 milligrams of calcium, which is almost the same as that contained in dairy products. The large number of vitamins can prevent the oxidation and aging of brain cells, so it is beneficial to children's intelligent development.

What's more, corn contains high content of glutamate, which can promote the metabolism of brain cells, so it has some function to invigorate the brain. Apart from carbohydrate, protein, fat, carotene, it also contains a large number of riboflavin. In addition, the fatty acids contained in corn are mainly linoleic acid, oleic acid and other unsaturated fatty acids, which are all nutrients conducive to the development of intelligence.

Experts point out, children's academic performance is affected by many factors. For example, whether eat breakfast or not, whether the nutrition of breakfast is adequacy or not, these can all affect children's memory and academic performance. As a result, nutrition experts suggest that a nutritious and healthy breakfast should include four types of food: grain foods such as steamed bun, noodles, bread; meat; milk and dairy products; as well as fruits and vegetables.

For the children who eat bread and milk at breakfast for a long time, it is a good choice to replace the milk with corn congee properly. But what parents need to consider carefully is, in addition to corn congee and milk, they should also give children more choices of food for breakfast.
