Italian Holidays That Go With A Bang

Italy conjures up images of exquisite cuisine, al fresco dining, Renaissance art and beautiful coastal scenes, and it delivers on all of these fronts. Italian holidays really do offer something for everyone, whether you are young or old and whether your passion is for art, culture, fine dining, architecture, outdoor pursuits or simple relaxation in beautiful surroundings.

Choose an Italian holiday to the Tuscan countryside, explore Sorrento and the Bay of Naples and take a trip along the Amalfi Drive, one of Italys most scenic coast roads, set high on the tops of the dizzyingly high cliffs. Experience authentic Italian cooking, cafe culture and daily life when you stroll the beautiful streets of Sorrento, a city perched upon a cliff-top. The mild Mediterranean climate means that whatever time of year you choose to visit Sorrento, you will enjoy the outdoor culture and be well placed to explore the small village of Sant Agata just six miles away, and enjoy stunning views of the Bay of Naples and the Bay of Salerno.

For an Italian break that mixes excitement and culture, visit Pompeii. Prepare to be amazed by the incredible rediscovery of an ancient city buried by the molten lava of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. Book with a reputable holiday company and the tour guide will point you in the direction of a local guide, who will be able to take you the extra 500 metres to the rim of the volcano if you really fancy living life on the edge.

Alternatively, take a holiday to Sicily and visit Europes highest active volcano, Mount Etna. Explore Sicilys extraordinary landscape before visiting the nearby medieval town of Taormina to reflect on the majesty of your surroundings.

If you would prefer to stick to the culture of Italys main towns and cities, ones not to miss include Florence, Rome, Venice and Sicilys capital of Palermo. Florence is widely recognised as the home of Renaissance art and, as such, it is a fascinating and truly beautiful place that really comes to life in the presence of a tour guide or operator who really knows their stuff. Get to know Florences most famous buildings and paintings, and it will surely plant itself firmly on your list of places to go back to time and time again.

For ancient architecture and incredibly famous art, Rome will not let you down. Visit the Sistine Chapel and marvel at Michelangelos ceiling, which is even more impressive in the flesh than it is in the thousands of photographs and paintings which reproduce it. Agrigento in Sicily is well worth a visit, to see the Valley of the Temples and just what the ancient world looked like. Stroll through the crumbling columns of the Greek temples of Hera Lacinia, Concordia, Heracles, Olympian Zeus, the Dioscuri and Hephaistos, all of which continue to inspire novelists, poets and artists.

When youve had enough of sightseeing, Italy is famous for its delicious fresh ingredients, and sampling the many different types of pizza, pasta and gelato (ice cream) is an absolute must for all holiday makers. In Sicily, the Greek, Arab and Spanish influences make for a truly unique combination of flavours that will make your mouth water, so make sure you work up an appetite seeing all the sights on your Italian holiday!
