Greece Holidays: Cruise the Islands and See the Historic Capital

Greece is on of the world's premier holiday destinations and has been hosting holidaymakers on its Islands for decades. The country is home to one of the world's oldest traceable civilisations, so there is a wealth of history to be explored on the mainland and in the old towns of the Islands. Tourists that choose a cruise to Greece will have the opportunity to visit the capital, Athens and see sites dating back thousands of years. The capital is usually part of a cruise package and a must see on Greece holidays.

One of Athens' most visited sites is the Parthenon, which sits on top of the Acropolis in the centre of Athens. As it is one of the most frequented tourist sites on the globe holidaymakers should take care to visit as early as possible in the day, before the crowds and the blazing Mediterranean sun make things too unbearable. The national archaeological museum is full of treasures showcasing the grand history of ancient Athens and the civilisations that have come and gone over the centuries.

The best thing about taking a cruise to Greece is that holidaymakers can enjoy pure luxury, having a great level of service that is a cut above what they can get in even the best hotels. Guests floating palaces also provide the opportunity to visit the Greek Islands before or after seeing the capital, a cruise is like having a few cheap holidays in Greece in one.

Kos is the second largest of the Dodenacese Islands after Corfu and is full of great things to do. The interior of the Island is good for hiking near the hills surrounding Mount Dikaios. Afterwards visitors can go by road to the golden sandy beaches on the northern coast of the Island.

After Kos nearby Corfu is a nice place to visit. The Island is full of winding mountain roads where the views over the Island and to the Greek mainland are spectacular. Corfu Town is the focal point of the Island, full of beautiful architecture inspired by grand European palaces and boulevards. In the north of the Island there are some beautiful coves around the family resorts in Sidari. The south of the Island, Kavos in particular, is popular among Hedonistic 18-30's enjoying sunny holidays in Greece.

Rhodes is one of the larger Greek Islands and the most populated. The Island has its share of beautiful beaches and the old town is full of architectural and historical treasures. The archaeological museum is located in the Hospital of the Knights; built in 1440 the museum is a spectacular example of Gothic architecture.
