1. Stop consuming alcohol as it can affect fertility in both partners. It can minimise your chances of conception by 50%. For man, alcohol causes a decrease in sperm count, an increase in abnormal sperm and a lower proportion of motile sperm. Alcohol also prevents the body's absorption of nutrients such as zinc, which is one of the most important minerals for fertility. Getting rid of alcohol consumption for at least three months prior to attempting conception will give you the best possible chance of getting pregnant.

2. Caffeine, especially in the form of coffee, decreases fertility. Drinking as little as one cup per day, can decrease your ability to have a baby by 50%. It is also a suspected cause of miscarriage in the first three months of pregnancy, reduce your ability to absorb iron which is needed plenty for pregnancy, and increase your risk for stillbirth. It is important to eliminate all caffeine-containing food and drinks for at least three months before trying to conceive. That includes colas, chocolate, black teas and coffee, among other things.

3. Smoking has definitely been linked with infertility in women. It can even bring on an early menopause, which is an important consideration for older women who may be trying to conceive. Smoking can decrease sperm count in men, making the sperm more sluggish, and it can increase the number of abnormal sperm. With men, the effects on fertility are increased with the number of cigarettes. Even secondhand smoke can affect fertility.

4. Household cleaners containing harsh chemicals need to be completely avoided.
