Problem Behavior - 5 Parenting Tips To Help You Keep Your Sanity!

When the temper tantrums reach an unbearable pitch, you wonder what on earth possessed you to have kids at all! That thought occurs more and more frequently as you have to deal with defiant kids, lying kids and children who are getting into toxic company. However, all is not lost as there are behavior modification techniques you can learn to deal with problem behavior. I am going to outline five parenting tips in this article to help you get started.

One of my favourite books on parenting is one called The Idle Parent and it has many useful tips in it about problem behavior and how to be a successful parent. One of the pieces of advice there is my first tip which is at the top of my list.

As our children are becoming slaves to electronic media, it is important to get them outdoors and have some more green time. All the studies done on this show that children behave much better after being in the open. They compared them to children in the shopping malls who were much more likely to have a temper tantrum or outburst. So, organize some green time and activities and you will reap the rewards such as a reduction in problem behavior.

The second tip is to monitor your kids' use of their electronic media. This is to make sure that they are not entering into toxic company through Facebook and e mail. Also some teens now get into 'sexting' where they start trading nude photos to get money. That could lead them to into trouble as they might get involved in a child pornography ring. If you get a good behavior therapy program, it shows how to monitor kids' use of the media so that you can keep an eye on what is going on and also block some sites if necessary.

The third tip is to monitor your kids for possible involvement with drugs. Parents are surprisingly nave as a report recently shows. Only 4% of parents of children from 9-11 actually believed this was a real possibility. When the kids themselves were asked, they estimated it as a 25% chance! Learning about behavior modification techniques helps you to look for signs of problem behavior relating to drug abuse.

My fourth tip is not to give in when a kid with a temper tantrum risks getting what he wants. There are ways you can deal with this so that your kid will never gain the upper hand. Once he learns that an outburst works for him, he will repeat it again and again. It is after all a winning strategy!

My fifth tip is to seek out a good behavior therapy program which tells what to do in every situation and what to say when dealing with mouthy and aggressive kids. Once you learn how to apply these and put them in place, you will never ever be at a loss for words when confronted with problem behavior. Isn't it time you got the upper hand in your house for a change?
