Extend Support to Military Families During Christmas Season

Extend Support to Military Families During Christmas Season

It sure is a daunting task to accept the responsibility of being a military member, especially if the individual is assigned overseas. But it is equally difficult to be a family or relative of these individuals in military service, and the struggle of extending support to military families becomes more noticeable when occasions or holidays are nearing like the Christmas season. So we think of ways on how to show Christmas love.

Yes, it can be very lonely, but it surely can be eased. Here are ten creative ideas of recognizing and supporting military families with loved ones away during the Christmas season:

1. Organize a Christmas dinner or party in order to know better the other military families and their members. During the party, devise games for both oldies and youngsters to make it a lot more hyper.

2. Hold weekly or monthly meet-ups, so to foster a deeper bonding among military families. These meet-ups may be in the form of movie group dates, lunch or dinner, or simple conversations over coffee.

3. Encourage each other to create personalized cards and send them via snail mail. A card from one of the bookstores may still be a nice idea, but it will be more heart warming to see and read something created from scratch and with much love and attention. And sure, modern technology allows us to communicate instantly via chat or Skype, but there's no substitute to the traditional snail mail and the feeling of receiving it.

4. Collect old clothes, shoes and other rummageables. With the big number of families who have military family members, for sure you can come up with boxes and boxes of old but useful stuff. And the good thing is, you can surely make money out of these.

5. Arrange a Christmas bazaar or sale where you can sell the rummageables collected from the families. The venue may be at one garage of your homes. Choose one family who is willing to offer their garage as the location.

6. After the day-long or two-day bazaar, you now have a good sum to buy quite a number of goodies.

7. Use the money, whatever amount it is, which you have accumulated from this rummage sale or bazaar to purchase goodies, toiletries, gifts and other things which you think will make your military loved ones happy and elated when they receive them during Christmas season.

8. Apart from selling old stuff, those of you who may know how to cook or bake may sell cookies, cakes, pasta and a lot of other gastronomic delights in order to pull together bigger funds for more purchases like medicines, etc.

9. Set-up laptops with web cams and assign a time when you guys will go online via Skype and chat with the military men during their break time. The more people in the background, the happier the atmosphere will be, so as to avoid sad, crying conversations.

10. Form a Sunday Bible group or class where you can be able to share excerpts from the Bible and relate them to your own stories, especially those involving the servicemen. This will help relieve the burden and loneliness you are feeling because of the distance and the holidays.

These are only ten suggestions that I can think of, but there are lots of other means by which you can extend support to military families and show love especially during the Christmas season. What is most important is to know that you are not alone and there exists a support group which can uplift your spirits when you miss your military loved ones.
