What Not To Wear While Volunteering Abroad

Weve all been there youve got your flights, visas and vaccinations all sorted, but theres just one problem your empty backpack/suitcase staring back up at you. What the hell are you going to wear?! Well, while every adventure is different, here are some dos and donts that might help you decide what to take and what to leave in your wardrobe

Do

Wear a hat if youre going somewhere hot sunstroke is not especially chic

Wear trousers and long sleeves in the evening if youre staying in a area affected by malaria getting ill is another thing thats not especially chic, so cover up to avoid becoming dinner for mosquitoes

Pack old clothes fashions loss is practicalitys gain, and you wont feel upset if your favourite t-shirt gets something unspeakable spilt down it!

Try to keep tattoos covered up in some cultures theyre synonymous with gangs

Bring a sarong with you its great for covering up when youre at the beach or visiting temples

Dont

Drench yourself in perfume or aftershave if youre working with animals it can end up bothering them!

Expose too much flesh especially if you want to be respected and dont want a shed-load of unwanted attention!

Bring your straighteners with you let go! Youll soon realise theres more to life than hair!

Pack white clothes its not a colour that mixes well with travel!

Remember though - it's not worth getting too hung up on what and what not to wear. Simply being comfortable is half the battle! For more volunteering abroad and gap year tips check out the travel guides on Campfire!
