Incontinence Treatments Different Causes Different Treatments

If you are one of the millions of people who experience continence problems then you should understand that there are probably underlying conditions that are causing the condition. Diagnosing those conditions correctly is the first step in determining effective incontinence treatments.

So it stands to reason that your first stop should be at your doctor's office where he or she can begin the process of determining just what is at the root at the problem. Often times incontinence is a symptom of very treatable conditions like urethritis, vaginitis or urinary tract infections. Simple antibiotics can help cure those conditions and when they are gone, odds are so is your incontinence problem.

There are other simple causes as well like constipation, side effects from medication (particularly hypertension drugs) and limited mobility. In each instance these underlying causes can be relatively easy to manage and eliminate the continence problem

If you get sudden urges to go you may have urge incontinence and this can be treated through changes in lifestyle and bladder training. Bladder training is simply scheduling bathroom stops starting out with a short interval and then gradually spreading them out over the period of a month or two until your bladder can "hold it" for at least 4 hours.

There are other types of incontinence and treatment for those can range from diet and exercise, to medication and as a last resort surgery. If you have what is known as mixed incontinence you may find yourself doing a combination of things to solve each type of underlying condition.

But first things first. Before you can decide on an incontinence treatment you need to thoroughly discuss the issue with your doctor. In fact the more information you can provide, the faster he or she can make a diagnosis. Before your visit, keep a diary of how much fluid you take in, when you make trips to the bathroom and how much fluid you pass. Knowing this will make your doctor's job easier.
