Nut Allergic Boy Finally Tastes a Baked Dessert; His Mom Smiles

Just before the 2010 FAAN Walk in Mission Bay, San Diego, a young boy with food allergies to nuts and peanuts considers a Campfire Blondie, Egg-Free Epicurean's smores dessert bar. The boy, Blake, we later learned has never eaten a baked sweet before, so watching him enjoy a bite was vicariously thrilling. And another. And another. His mom was quite happy. All in all, a compelling testimonial for Campfire Blondies.

Egg-Free Epicurean bakes gourmet cookies and desserts in its dedicated nut free facility in North San Diego County.

Amy Jones Anichini, the firm's CEO and Founder, learned how to bake without eggs so her daughter could have delicious treats to enjoy at friends' birthday parties. Ms. Anichini wasn't satisfied with treats that were merely safe, she wanted them so irresistible that non-allergic party-goers would want them instead of the cake. Over time Ms. Anichini's baking reputation grew to the point where people began requesting her cookies, cakes, and bars at parties, even when there were no allergic people present.

The owners of Egg-Free Epicurean, Tom Anichini and his wife, Amy Jones Anichini, collectively have decades of experience in various financial services roles, including pension actuary, bond underwriter, and equity portfolio manager. Neither one of them could recall a time when people actually thanked them for being in business. After the FAAN Walk, several food allergic parents and grandparents e-mailed the Anichinis to thank them for starting their business, and let them know just how thrilled they were to know there was something tasty to offer their food allergic child for birthday parties and on special occasions.
