How to Detect Leaking Toilet and Prevent High Water Bills?

Water is precious (and cost money) in Singapore, there may be instances of home and business owners receiving higher than normal water bills due to leaks in their plumbing systems. Such big or small leaks are often the main reason for exceptionally high water bills and it is important for you to be able to detect the source of the leak and prevent unnecessary wastage of water and high water bills.

In many instances, leaks are due to the toilet bowls. As you can't hear any sound from running water, the leaks can go on without detection and increase your water bills in no time. Before shaking your head in despair, you can perform a simple dye check to confirm if the water leakage is from your toilet bowl.

Get yourself some food dye and add about 20 drops into the toilet tank of your toilet bowl. After you done so, do not flush or use your toilet bowl for the next 30 minutes and check if colour appears in your toilet bowl. If it does, you have a leaking toilet bowl and will need to repair its flushing system to stop the leakage.

However, if no colour gets into the bowl, you have ruled out your toilet bowl as the source of the leak. The next step you can do is to take a reading from your water meter and stop using water for a couple of hours. After that, take a reading again and see if the water meter still runs. If you find the numbers increasing, you have a leak in your plumbing system. Check that all taps, sprinklers and shower heads are dripping, if they are not, the leaks should be coming from your piping which can be concealed and thus difficult to spot.

In this instance, you will need to call in a plumber to perform water leaking detection services and identify the source of your leak and carry out the necessary plumbing services to stop your leak fast.
