The Importance of Security and Insurance When Choosing a Storage Operator

Generally while looking for a self storage facility, we focus on the price and don't give enough importance to the security issues. In fact, when you store your expensive articles at a storage facility, it is very important that the facility is secured and offers services to protect stored items. Most of the customers don't ask the important questions about security and insurance before choosing a self storage facility. Many of the self storage facilities in USA and Canada claim that their location is secured, but many falls short of having adequate security.

Here is a list of critical factors to look for before selecting a self storage facility:

1) When choosing a storage facility it is important to make sure they have 24-hour video surveillance (and surveillance everywhere).

Video cameras are an absolute necessity at any storage facility. Cameras help deter theft. Make sure the facility uses real cameras! Unfortunately, many facilities put up fake cameras that cannot record video to identify any intruders. At any storage facility, cameras need to be strategically located throughout the facility and should have 24x7 recording. The most important areas are the entry and exit gates at the facility.

2) Make sure each unit is individually alarmed

Most storage facilities only have alarm on the main gate or in the office. That is not enough. It is very important to have each unit individually alarmed to prevent break-ins. Individual alarms for each storage units provides additional layer of security and further confidence to the renter.

3) Make sure that the facility is in a good area.

Location! Location! Location! It is always good to make sure that the storage facility is located in a good area, where the facility is easily accessible and is in an area where the crime rate is low. You can also search on Google maps to find a self storage in USA and self storage in Canada. Check online and make sure that the neighborhood is rated safe and is accessible from main roads. For example, if you live in Washington, DC, you can first search for "storage facility Washington, DC" to find a storage operator close to your place and then lookup how good their location is.

4) If the facility offers insurance, purchase it.

We assume that the storage providers will automatically provide insurance for our stored items. Generally, this is not the case. Many of the storage facilities offer full and comprehensive insurance that covers any damage due to water leakage or theft. Purchasing full-protection for your stored goods will give you a peace of mind if unforeseen events occur.
