Can Your Child Learn From An ABC Rug?

You might be wondering what an ABC rug is anyway. Well, simply it's a small rug that has the alphabet woven in large letters and easy to see. Many child care professionals and parents are purchasing these rugs as educational tools for their toddlers. They look great in a child's room too.

Most children begin kindergarten knowing their ABCs which gives them a good start in the learning process. Everything is built on knowledge of the alphabet; you can't learn to read if you don't first know your abc's. In the beginning just having the rug in your child's room is enough. He or she will continually be exposed to the letters and eventually realize that each one is different and must mean something. Without being told, the child will get no meaning from the letters on the rug. When your toddler is old enough you can simply begin pointing out certain letters on the rug to him; maybe the letters in his name. Later you will want to teach him each letter more formally.

Learning through games is always fun for toddlers, and learning the alphabet is no exception. Once your child can point out most letters, even if it takes some time, you can play games to increase your child's recognition of letters. Having a race to the rug to touch the letter called out is an easy one. After you have taught your child to recognize the letters in his name, you may teach simple words like dog, cat, mom and dad.

You can also teach colors using a colorful ABC rug. Some rugs will also have shapes, numbers, and animals on the rug. While children readily use their imagination and love to learn, do not try to teach the alphabet, numbers or anything else to a child who is not ready. It will simply frustrate you and the child and quite possibly affect the child's learning for years. Regardless of when the child is ready to be taught, the rug will provide lots of fun for and learning opportunities for many years.
