Choosing Halloween Costumes Should Be Fun

There are many reasons why Halloween is such a popular time to go to a party and getting the chance to dress up in costumes is a big one. People love getting the opportunity to shed their everyday persona and try on something different for a change. Halloween costumes have evolved to the point that almost anything goes when it comes to choosing an alter ego for the evening.

The ancient Druids began the tradition of dressing up in animal skins to escape detection by the spirits that were believed to walk among the living during Samhain. By 1895, people in Scotland and Ireland were dressing up in costumes and participating in an early form of trick-or-treating. Halloween parties grew popular in the United States just after the turn of the 20th century. In 1930, the first costumes were sold to consumers and it has been big business ever since.

The more traditional characters seen are creatures most often found in supernatural tales. Ghosts, witches, werewolves, vampires, devils and demons of all shapes and sizes are popular with adults and children alike.

Aliens, superheroes and villains are great ideas for both men and women who are looking to change their identity. Recent blockbuster movies have seen a rise in people dressing up like Iron Man, the Joker and Batman. Wonder Woman has been a long time favorite of the ladies.

Fairy tales are full of great ideas for fanciful outfits. Alice encountered a whole host of colorful characters including the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts. Books and movies are great places to find various outfits that can be coordinated for a family or a group of people.

Pop culture has provided plenty of inspiration for great costume ideas. Political figures, musicians and people in the news provide fodder for the imagination. When it comes to transforming the face, there are several options. Makeup applied with a skilled hand can recreate any look that can be imagined. Paint sticks are easy to work with because they are thick and will cover any imperfections and even stubble. For those who do not want to invest the time required for proper makeup, there are elaborate latex masks of all kinds. Monsters, celebrities, aliens and animals are just some of the choices available. Mustaches, wigs and beards can transform anyone instantly. Fake blood may be applied in strategic places for effect.

Without the proper accessories, costumes are just clothes. So there are a number of different items that will add the finishing touch needed to make any outfit spectacular. No pirate costume is complete without the eye patch, a sword and maybe even a stuffed parrot perched on the shoulder. Devils are not nearly as scary without a pair of horns, a pointed tail and a fierce looking trident to wield.

Halloween costumes have a way of allowing anybody to step outside of their own skin and try on a whole new identity. Presentation is important but it is all about imagination and fun.
