Watching parents with kids in the shopping mall, I often think that about 90% of them are into the nag, yell, punish routine. It is always the same! It seems that only about 10% of parents use the firm, calm and compassionate mode. Now with ADHD and parents not sticking to the bottom line, the consequences are even more disastrous.
Let us see what we can do so that discipline problems for kids withADHD and parents need not be so traumatic, melodramatic or just plain deafening.
If you want your ADHD child to clean his room and wants something in return, just ignore it. The child should NOT be encouraged to do a deal. Try to stay calm, persist with your request and above all, do not yell.
The second thing to make sure that they know what the bottom line is to resist stating why it is a good idea to tidy their room. They always ask why so there is no need to repeat this. You do not have to defend your position and very often saying that you have decided, will eventually get through. But justifying, dealing and then surrendering are just the wrong methods to adapt.
Very often we are tempted as parents to do a deal and even offer a bribe to get some things done. But this is wrong because again the bottom line is being trampled on and it leads to all sorts of indulgences.
In dealing with children with ADHD and parents, very often the situation within the home and the routines and structures established are very often neglected. That has disastrous consequences. If your home is not ADHD friendly in the sense that the routines are regularly broken, no tasks are broken down and you lurch from one chaotic situation to another, then I am afraid that nothing is going to change. The examples above are what you can learn on a child behavior modification course so that you know how to handle any situation and know exactly what to say. That is the essence of establishing the bottom line and sticking to it.
