Spinalonga Isle Development May Alleviate Economic Ailment

After reading The Island by Victoria Hislop, its only natural for your curiosity to be aroused, which will then, hopefully, encourage you to catch a glimpse of the place that inspired the story.

The island of Spinalonga is situated on the northeastern side of Crete, which is one of the more renowned isles in Greece. From 1903 to 1957, the island was a leper colony. Leprosy was a dreaded disease and those who were sick with it were exiled there until doctors finally discovered that leprosy was a curable bacterial illness.

The island fortress was soon deserted and became closed to visitors. Yet it was a television series based on Hislops novel that made people remember the island again. The series starred talented artists, such as, Stelios Mainas, Katerina Lechou and Aimilios Cheilakis. The spinoff series gave a rather truthful account of the islands history as a leper colony, which gave the public deeper insight about the isles past. Over 850,000 copies of the book were sold in the United Kingdom alone, and the rights have been sold to more than 17 countries. Like the novel, the series also enthralled many viewers with its attention-grabbing plot.

People have worked on reopening the fortress isle to the general public and they have already appealed to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The appeal is currently under consideration. Previously closed due to lack of staff, the island is open on weekends and hopes to enjoy an economic surge from visitors.

Distinct tourism schemes like these can hopefully facilitate Greeces economic development and aid in improving the job market. Its unlikely that corporate schemes would fail. But if they do, another alternative to keep out of debt is to capitalize on the remarkable and impressive stories about Greece.
