subject: Parents' Biggest Fears- Can Caretakers Handle The Responsibility? [print this page]

There are probably too few mothers in the world who aren't cautious enough when it comes to the well-being of their children, and probably too many who are overly-cautious. Teachers and caretakers are responsible for keeping children safe as well as meeting the needs of anxious parents. Parents tend to be most concerned about

1. Sun burns:

A child's skin is particularly sensitive, which is why parents are so insistent that it is covered in sun screen at all times during summer months. Getting a child to sit still is difficult enough, let alone twenty children or more, which is the reality of summer camp leaders. However, it is essential that it gets done, because in addition to not wanting the kid to suffer, the parent will hit the roof if you return their child with red skin! In addition to sun screen, caretakers should make sure that children are always under some sort of play shade, where they are protected from UV rays.

2. Bullying:

Seeing your child come home in tears, or worse yet, injured at the hands of a peer, is one of the most devastating things a parent can go through. How though, can they guarantee their child's safety at all times? As children get older they spend less and less time at home, and therefore away from their parents protection. As a result parents need to be able to trust their children's caretakers and teachers, and believe that they will be there to protect their children and have their best interests at heart.

3. Diet:

From the day they are born, children's diets are a concern for all parents. It is critical that they get sufficient nutrients for healthy growth and development. Mothers will often pack their children's lunches complete to the recommended dietary standards of a national health board. Their insistance that the child doesn't come in contact with harmful substances like sugar can sometimes effect the child in years to come. In addition to peer influences and media images, teens attitudes about weight are also affected by their parents behaviours and beliefs, so beware.

4. Education:

Most parents will not be satisfied leaving their child with a nanny who is only capable of setting them in front of the TV. Understandably, parents want their kids to be learning all the time, to help their brains develop during critical learning years. As a result most parents will demand that their nanny has a variety of educational activities planned for the child. Taking the child outside for a substancial part of each day is a good place to start, as fresh air does wonders for our minds.

Being a caretaker is a huge responsibility. In addition to taking care of a small, dependent person, caretakers must do so to the standards of their employers. This means ensuring that the child is safe, educated, and healthy. Caretakers, are you up for the challenge? And parents, can you let go of some of your control?
