A Shift of Identity The Awesome Power to Affect Personal Changes

"There is no more potent leverage in shaping human behavior than identity." Tony Robbins

We behave as we perceive ourselves to be and we attract the situations and conditions that most appropriately fit the vision that we have of who we believe to be. An achiever usually achieves and a loser stumbles almost every time he turns around. Self-perception determines the life's scenario.

If we want to affect major changes in our life, the first thing that we have to do is to change the perception that we have of ourselves. No lasting change is possible without a change of identity.

The popular belief is that our identity is something that we were born with and must wear like a second skin for the rest of our life. Not so. Our identity was shaped by beliefs that we picked up along the way and most of those beliefs were formed by generalizations stemming from isolated incidents or suggestions that we accepted from others.

Someone told us that we were good at math but lousy with English and that was it; for the rest of our life, we're good at math and can't spell two words right. Unbelievable as it may sound, that's how most of our identity was formed.

Identities can be modified to change a specific belief or it can be improved upon in a general way. To change a specific belief all that we have to do is to find enough references that will support the different belief.

A belief is nothing but a notion that is supported by evidences. Someone told us that we were lousy at math and that was enough evidence to lead us to believe that, indeed, we are not good with numbers. However, if we put our mind to it, we can always find evidences that will support an opposite belief and thus, change the perception that we have about our ability in math.

Overall improvement of the identity requires a slightly different approach. We become like whomever we identify with. That's the reason that different people in groups tend to talks alike and think alike. So, one way that we can change positively the way that we see ourselves is by associating with people who already have the qualities that we want to acquire.

Understandably it's not easy to join the: Trump, Gates, Obama and Tony Robbins of this world. However we don't have to know these people first hand to identify with them. Identifying with someone or a group is done on the emotional and intellectual level, not on the physical plane.

Identifying with someone is the realization that we share a common humanness, that we were given roughly the same equipment at birth. That we have more in common than what separates us and, most of all, realizing that since we have the same type of brain, there is no earthly reason that we cannot think alike.

If we set our mind to it, we can identify with anyone that we want, living of dead. The only barrier to identifying with anyone that we wish is our unwillingness to do so or a very poor self-image. When everything is taken into consideration, man's commonness takes up over ninety nine percent while less than one percent is left to what separates us.

Given those numbers, how hard can it be to identify with anyone that we want? All that we have to do is read the biographies of the people that we want to emulate and identify with then, let nature takes it course. Soon, without even being aware of the fact, our perceived identity will start to change as will our behavior and the results that we'll get.

We can be anything that we want to be. We can do anything that we want to do and have almost anything that we want to have. It's simply a question of commitment, courage, perseverance and perceived identity.
