So Your Band Has Done Everything Online and Offline, What’s Next?

You have followed all the tips and suggestions and created a promotional machine using your bands web site and on social network sites; youve papered your area with fliers and posters and been reviewed by the local paper. You band has done everything online and offline so whats next? Perform! You can have the most brilliant promotional campaign and make your bands name ubiquitous, but the bottom line in this industry will always be the music. Now that you have the foundation in place for reaching and interacting with your fans and making new ones get out there and perform anywhere and everywhere you can. Performing in public sharpens your stage skills and presence. It also makes you a better musician and singer. Plus, it gives you something to promote. The most successful web sites change continually every day if possible especially if you are just starting out. You want to give people a reason to come back. Performing is the best way to update your site. Get representation. Theres usually only so far a band can get on its own. Eventually youll need to get an agent or manager to help your band reach that next professional level. And its easier to get representation if you can show you have a fan base, courtesy of the promotional work youve invested online and offline. Work on your craft. Sometimes musicians get so wrapped up in promotions that they put their creativity on the back burner. Thats another value of having representation: agents and managers take care of the nuts and bolts of getting bookings, arranging meetings with labels, and other band business. That gives you the time to rehearse and concentrate on being the best musicians your band can be. Write your own music. Cover bands are usually limited in their success. While its true labels can hook up bands with songwriters, you will be far more valuable to a label if you write your own music. Go on the road. Getting away from your comfort zone is an important step in establishing a national career. Start by going to cities within a few hours drive. Then spread out and plan weekend trips to play college towns or other areas where you have developed fans. The travel can be exhausting but there is no substitute for personal appearances. Even after you get a record deal, life on the road will be a fact of life while you build your bands career. Just consider it an investment for your musical future.
