Faulkners difficult, elusive and episodic novel The Sound and the Fury is often considered his masterwork and one of the greatest American novels ever written. Marked by its distinct stream of consciousness writing style, the novel is set in Faulkners fictional Yoknapatawpha County which Faulkner wrote many of his stories around. The novel is centered around the Compson family, who are wealthy white aristocrats struggling to maintain their sanity and family closeness. The novel is broken up into four different sections, each focusing on a different member of the Compson family.
