New Discovery Reveals Possible Mesothelioma Suppressant

A possible breakthrough in efforts to suppress mesothelioma tumor growth was recently identified in a scientific research study, published in an online issue of The Journal of Biological Chemistry, and conducted by Rosetta Genomics and New York University's Langone Medical Center.

Using microRNA (miRNAs), researchers have discovered a new way to effectively target treatments for mesothelioma. The human genome encodes several hundred miRNA genes that produce single-strand RNA molecules that regulate different systems in the body. Sometimes when miRNAs express themselves in an abnormal way, they are linked to cancer progression. Until recently, their role in cell mutation and tumor creation was poorly understood, as was any way to use them in treatments.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that is resistant to conventional treatments like radiation therapy, surgery, and chemotherapy. Scientists discovered that aggressive forms of the disease don't express MicroRNA-31, recently linked to suppressing breast cancer.

Further study has indicated that miR-31 inhibits mesothelioma cells from migrating, replicating or invading other parts of the body. The problem is that mesothelioma kills off all the miR-31's in the body, then builds resistance to chemotherapy and radiation by mutating further.

Re-introducing miR-31 suppressed the mesothelioma's cell cycle and prevented the cancer cells from building up a resistance to chemotherapy and radiation.

Overall, the data suggests that miR-31 can suppress tumors, and can be used for the development of new therapies against mesothelioma and other cancers. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you need a New York mesothelioma lawyer who understands not only what you're going through, but knows how to help.

Gregg J. Borri is a New York mesothelioma lawyer who specializes in asbestos litigation. His law offices provide legal representation to victims of asbestos exposure (the principal cause of mesothelioma), namely those diagnosed with one of the three mesothelioma types pleural, peritoneal, or pericardial mesothelioma. Each New York mesothelioma lawyer there is committed to forcefully and effectively advocating their clients' claims to legal compensation from the corporations that caused or contributed to their exposure to asbestos, allowing clients to focus on medical treatment.
