When Mama's Happy, Everybody's Happy

This may sound like too broad of a statement, but I would guess that most people have trouble working in time for exercise and physical activities in this day and age.

But even more than most, mothers--especially new moms--generally have little time to devote to themselves, and when they do find some, the last thing they usually want to do is work up a sweat.

That is why it is so important for mothers to find ways to make their workout routines more convenient by incorporating them into everyday life.

After all, the benefits of regular exercise are too numerous to list comprehensively, but you will find that your spirits are lifted and your body is energized. And to give the flipside to an old saying, when Mama's happy, everybody's happy!

The best way to maximize your exercise without having to create a schedule when someone can watch your children is to get those little whipper-snappers involved!

When your kids are still young, they want to be just like Mommy, so it will be easy to get them to do Pilates, yoga, or kickboxing with you in the comfort of your home. There are countless videos/DVDs out there, so you can take your pick. Plus, you can go at your own pace, pausing or stopping when you need to.

Once your children start to get a little older and get involved with sports, it would be beneficial to you to help them practice in whatever fashion you wish. Kick a soccer ball around in the backyard or play softball at the local park.

It's all right if you aren't very athletic--it will be more important to your children that you are involved and interested in what they are doing.

A more solicitous mother of an infant may hope to get her pre-pregnancy body back, but may be anxious over the idea of leaving her newborn. In such cases, she needs to be able to take her baby with her!

If this sounds like you, then check at local thrift stores or with friends to find a hand-me-down jogging stroller--or even consider investing in a new one for yourself. There are even double strollers for those of you that have two children young enough to ride in a stroller.

Now, as I am more of a hiker than a runner, the best option for me has been to have a front baby carrier. Front baby carriers, of course, strap your baby to your chest and provide support through shoulder straps and sometimes include a waistband as well. These are convenient for other times when you need a way to carry baby hands-free.

Don't let motherhood stand in the way of a healthy lifestyle. After all, now that you have youngsters to care for, you need to set the best example for them.
