Kefalonia is the largest Ionian island situated in western Greece. It holds a population of about 45,000 and it occupies a total area of about 302 square miles. Argostoli is the capital city of Kefalonia. Another major town in the island of Kefalonia is Lixouri. The island is said to be a repository of resorts. This is primarily the reason for the large number of tourists drawn by the destination. Tourists enjoy their visits to the villages situated in the island that offer picturesque and attractive sight to their eyes. It is interesting to note that many of the villages are located right on the mountainous regions of the island.Villages are seen even on the breath-taking coastline. The village of Fiscardo is one of the most haunted places in Kefalonia. The place is known to abound in Venetian buildings that survived the huge earthquake of 1953.

The island of Kefalonia is laden with a number of beaches that are haunted in all parts of the year by the tourists and the residents alike. These beaches are characterised by white sand and wonderful emerald waters. One of the most famous beaches of the island is the Myrtos Beach. The highest mountain in Kefalonia is Mount Ainos. The Melissani and the Drogarati cave are the two of the important places of tourist interest in the island. It is interesting to note that you can find a lot of loggerhead turtle population on the island. Kefolonia is home to several museums such as Korgialeneios Museum, Kosmetatos Foundation in Argostoli, Archeological Museum in Argostoli, Lakovatios Library in Lixouri and Museum in Fiscardo. Tourists prefer to stay in or around Lassi, a beautiful resort located near Argostoli. Tourists and residents are served well by the Kefalonia Island International Airport. In summer you would find a number of charter flights from all major UK airports to Kefalonia.
