American Children Are At Risk

When you think about people in need, you may think about those who live in third-world countries and who have very little opportunity for education or improved lifestyles. If you look around you in this country, you may think of the homeless person as he is portrayed in television or movies. Usually, we are shown a middle-aged man in an old worn-out coat, reminiscent of the classic hobo of years past. Would it surprise you to learn that one out of every fifty children in America is facing the very real threat of being homeless? Even harder to believe is that nearly half of those children are younger than 8 years old! The downturn of the economy has really hit the children of our country hard.

What are some of the causes that force children into these dire circumstances? Children are the innocent victims of things that go on around them. For instance, if parents divorce, small children may be left with a parent who cannot get a job in this time of excessive unemployment. Thus the children are left to suffer many kinds of deprivation. Sometimes children have parents who are addicted to alcohol or drugs which causes them to neglect their children. Many children are victims of some form of abuse. These challenges are not the fault of the children, but they suffer just the same.

Understanding the challenges that American families are facing today, it is good to know that many charitable organizations have been set up to help with this very immediate problem. Many of these charities are designed especially for the aid of children in this country. They operate through churches or communities, and some are even organized nationally. If you are willing to assist the needy children, then it is nice to know that institutions are organized to make the best of anything that is donated to them for the benefit of the children. They work with other businesses to make the most of every donation and see that the children who are the neediest get the most help.

Whether the charitable organization you choose to work with offers meals, clothes, or housing for the children and their families, you can help them. Whether you have available food, clothing, money, or time, you can find a way to help. Look for an organization that uses the type of donation you are able to make. Your talents, knowledge and means can be used to improve the life of a child.
