Top Ten Tips For The Best Beach Holidays

Everyone looks for different things in a holiday, but for many of us, beach holidays are what we really look forward to every year. The perfect sands are high on many peoples holiday tick lists. Whether you're staying in the UK or travelling to tropical shores, staying safe is extremely important, so here are my top ten tips for making the most of your beach holidays every year.

1. Swimming: Never swim within an hour of eating as it could cause stomach cramps and never ever swim after drinking alcohol. Stick to designated areas for swimming the roped off areas are there for a reasonand always tell someone when you go for a swim, currents can change extremely quickly and take you by surprise.

2. Sun Cream: Dont forget to take your sun lotion on beach holidays, if you do, head to the nearest shop or ask to borrow some. It can take only a few minutes of direct sunlight to damage your skin and not much longer for it to start burning. Remember to keep re-applying, especially after swimming.

3. Fluids: Take some bottled water with you, its surprising how quickly we can dehydrate in the sun, and no, alcohol does not count as fluid on this occasion! Alcohol is a major contributor of dehydration and mixing it with too much sun is simply a recipe for disaster.

4. Footwear: The sand can get very hot in the intense heat of the day, and can seriously burn your feet so dont forget to take a pair of flip flops or beach shoes with you. Watch out for sharp stones or shells, and some shorelines can be quite pebbly and really hurt your feet.

5. Diving: Never dive off jetties or rocks unless you know what is beneath the surface and how deep the water is. Having fun in the water is one of the greatest parts of beach holidays but make sure you stay safe.

6. Water sports: Make sure that you use a reputable company that has insurance, always put on a life jacket and listen carefully to the rules given to you. Tell someone where you are going and never do water sports after consuming alcohol.

7. Sleep: Lying on a lilo or in a dinghy as the water laps around you is the ideal distraction on beach holidays. Floating around the waters edge is a great way to keep cool, but be careful not to fall asleep, not only could you drift out to sea, but also suffer severe sun stroke.

8. Keep belongings safe: Take the minimum amount of valuables with you, keep cameras and phones out of sight in a bag, zip it up and tuck the bag away under your towels or even fasten it to the sun bed. Opportunist thieves will not want to attract attention to themselves by having to rummage through your things.

9. Children: Never leave children unattended whilst they play on beach holidays, it is very easy for them to lose their bearings, wander off and get lost or even get into difficulties in the shallowest of water.

10. Shade: Most of us want to make the most of our time at the beach so arrive early in the morning, and often stay until late in the day, this is far too long to be spending in the hot sun so make sure you choose somewhere to relax with the option of shade, preferably an umbrella where you are in control of when you use it.

Using these simple tips will help to ensure that your beach holidays are ones you will always remember for all the right reasons.
