subject: How To Be The Best Cat Parent On The Block [print this page]

If you want your cat to enjoy life with you as much as you enjoy life with her there are a few simple things you can do. These things can make your cat happier but also strengthen your relationship with her.

Create A Cat Friendly Environment

Granted if your cat already has a loving home she has a nice environment, but indoor cats also crave cozy places to sleep, things to climb on and places to hide. Cats love looking out the window and sitting in the sun. By making some of these things easily accessible your cat will be happier and you and you may be too as she will likely try to seek them out anyway. By creating these spaces for her she may not get into things you don't want her to as she will seek these things out anyway.

Respect Her Space And Need For Affection

If your cat is in hiding somewhere, whether she is napping or hiding from a noise, she wants to be there. Wait for her to come out on her own instead of trying to pull her out of her space.

The same can apply when it comes to giving her affection. Sometimes forcing affection can turn into a bad interaction. When she is eating or playing she likely doesn't want affection. You can invite her by holding out your hand to see how she reacts. Once you get to know your cat you can tell when she is in a loving mood or feeling irritated -- the twitching tail is a sure sign she's not in the mood. Keep in mind when you are busy working on something you don't want her to bother you either, for instance if you are concentrating on something on the computer you don't want her to walk all over the keyboard or stand in front of the screen for attention.

Cat Play Time

It is also important to play with her regularly. Not only is it fun for her but it is a good way for her to get needed exercise. Playing stimulates her mind also which means she may not get into things you don't want her into later. It's a fun way to bond with her too.

Bring Fun Things Home For Your Cat

Bringing fun things to her when you come home can be especially important for a strictly indoor cat. Things from outside seem to be particularly interesting for a cat, things like a couple dry leaves, a small stick or a pine cone. Cat toys are fun too, but you can bring simple things home for them to investigate and play with. Outdoor items are full of scents and they often make fun cat toys.
