Spin Off That Payroll Department

Spin Off That Payroll Department

The globalization of the economy really has a lot of business executives scratching their heads for solutions. In the old model of running a business, whenever there was a task that needed to be done on a regular basis, all an executive had to do was form a department for it. The company hires people, gives them their objectives, and that was that.

But the globalization of the economy has placed a terrible strain on profitability. A company expanding into another market meant it had to allocate resources for that market, reducing its earnings. With more markets to enter, there's more need for resources and consequently less earnings.

But a number of forward thinking companies decided there were better ways to do business. Rather than have a big business, it was better to utilize the departments as revenue earners. Imagine each department, with its specialists and decision makers, as a unit of the company that does work for the company and for other companies. Essentially, it is spinning off a department into another company.

The trend probably started with the delivery department of companies. Big companies with big fleets probably found themselves expending resources on trips that only earned on the delivery trip but nothing on the return trip. So it probably made sense that return trips were utilized to accept deliveries from other companies whose cargo was to go on the return route of the fleet.

With computers nowadays, a company with a sizable department can make it into a unit source of revenue. One of the possible corporate departments that have a potential to be a source of income for the company is its payroll department. An online payroll services unit can serve both its mother unit and other clients as well.

An online payroll services unit for a company would not be difficult to establish. Since a company has already hired specialist in the department, all it would take is a manager who will market the services of the unit.

The parent company will probably have to nurse the online payroll services unit in its infancy. But as soon as it has accumulated a significant number of clients, the unit can generate the income for itself and for the parent company.
