Get Help Managing a Classroom with Online Training

Assertive discipline grew up in the 1970s around the theories of Lee Canter concerning classroom behavior problems he witnessed between students and teachers. He saw these behaviors as systemic and found that teachers often lacked classroom management skills to rid their classrooms of the problems. As a result, Canter developed an assertive discipline approach and curriculum to help teachers develop the skills they needed to better address behavior problems and increase the learning potential of their classrooms. Some of these theories are introduced to teachers during their undergraduate coursework. Later graduate coursework often places more emphasis on understanding and applying discipline and classroom management techniques in the classroom and then assessing the effectiveness of the teacher in implementing the discipline model. New advancements in the area of discipline and classroom management available to teachers works to create finely tuned classroom environments in which teachers can focus on proactive teaching rather than on reactive discipline. PBS Teacherline, an online training program, offers teacher graduate credit for coursework on assertive discipline among other topics. The courses are targeted to teachers who are completing their graduate degree and offer a wide range of subjects including computers, discipline, reading, math and science in the classroom. Teacher graduate credit is available for each course after approval from a district office. These courses not only help teachers acquire and implement the skills they need to manage their classrooms better, but they offer online coaching and feedback from teachers' peers and education experts as teachers work to use the new strategies in the classroom. Such online courses provide a large extended network of peers who bring an extensive and valuable diversity of insights and information into a teacher's learning experience.
