Bands of woodcutters and their slaves hacked away at melkbos, wild olive and yellowwood for the Castle in the central city, as well as for ships that passed by the Cape, and numerous other end-users.

In spite of all of this damaging effort, the relative inaccessibility of the upper end of the Hout Bay valley, coupled with the high profile nature of the site, has left much of it relatively undeveloped. What has been built at Houtkapperspoort replaces a virtually impenetrable mass of wall-to-wall Port Jackson weed with an environment that has already offered pleasure to hundreds.
The extensive clearing and indigenous planting programme is now underway will slowly restore the surroundings to what they once were, bearing in mind of course, that not everybody was happy with that. Our Houtbay accommodation is one of the best in Hout Bay.
All our self contained cottages offer tasteful furnishings, TV, DVD players, bed linen and towels, pergola covered veranda, barbecue, daily basic cleaning service, fridge, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery and glassware. Cooking facilities include a four plate electric/gas stove with an electric oven and a microwave.
Most have air-conditioning and some have fireplaces. The One and Two Bedroom self catering cottages have either one or two bathrooms, the Three bedroom self catering cottages have either two or three bathrooms, and all four bedrooms in the Manor House have en-suite bathrooms.
The Houtkapperspoort self catering cottages are created from Table mountain sandstone and timber combined with the most modern construction techniques. Our fashionable cottages are cozy but sophisticated, and are sheltered from the Cape South Easter.
