South Africa Holidays Go East!

Be sure to include some time for the magnificent Dolphin Coast with its wide variety of accommodations, beaches, world-class golf, nature areas and sparkling beaches when you are putting together your South Africa holidays agenda. This fascinating region is on the east coast, north of the great city of Durban in the KwaZulu Natal.

The geography of the Dolphin Coast reaches from Ballito and its Tongaat River to the Umhlali River, a stretch that is sprinkled with marvellous resorts. Visitors often report sighting playful bottlenose dolphins in the waters of the Indian Ocean, hence the name. Keep in mind that this unique landscape is quite isolated from much of the hustle and bustle of the big cities, yet its only 30 minutes by car from Durban.

Sunshine Coast

For yet another extraordinary South Africa holidays experience, spend some time on the Sunshine Coast, which stretches from St. Francis Bay to East London. Luxurious travel arrangements are available to ensure your comfort while you enjoy the view. But you can also arrange a safari trip to see big game animals in their natural habitat. These trips can be made by four-wheel-drive vehicle or, in some cases, on foot. There are several top-shelf game lodges that cater to your every need.

You may want to include a Port Elizabeth stop on your trip as well. This area is considered the water-sports mecca of the country. It is home to the Ironman Triathlon-South Africa, yet another reason to put this on your list of things to do on your South Africa holidays.

Of Sardines and Sharks

Some visitors to South Africa make straight for what they call the wild coast, if only because it is different from Cape Town and Johannesburg in many ways. Travellers include this area on their South Africa holidays because of a unique event the sardine run. For about two weeks each year these tiny fish follow cold-water streams that lead north. What makes this event so fascinating? Larger marine animals such as sharks and dolphins feed on the sardines, creating quite a spectacle for those who are fortunate enough to be there. But you can get even closer to the sharks, if you dare! With the correct guidance and equipment its possible to get up close and personal with a few of these large fish. You may even see a southern right whale or a humpback along the way.

After all this excitement you may need to relax and enjoy a few of the human creature comforts. You certainly can in nearby Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London and other port towns. There are fine restaurants, night clubs and hotels to accommodate you after an exhilarating day on the water or in the wild.

If you still have some energy left you can always play tennis at one of the professional venues, enjoy great golf, or bet a few coins on the thoroughbreds at one of the area courses. To put it simply, there is plenty to occupy your time on the east coast. Turn your South Africa holidays attention to the east.
