Each year since 1988, Munich welcomes international theatre companies, pop, rock and jazz music for the Tollwood Summer Festival (Das Tollwood Sommerfestival). With its relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, plethora of food and entertainment for days on end, it has been popular since the very beginning. Many of the smaller performances and events held are free of charge, but you should expect to pay to see the major acts.
At Tollwood, well known acts and relatively obscure artists have the opportunity to play side by side. To name just a few of the artists who are to perform in 2010: Pet Shop Boys, Norah Jones, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Roger Hodgson.
Also on board in this city of tents and open-air stages are cabaret performances and comedy entertainment, circus shows, stage plays and all kinds of music. All of the performances take place in tents and open-air stages in Munich's Olympic Park.
Visit one of more than 200 stalls where you can purchase handmade crafts and organic culinary delicacies from all over the world. You can find almost anything at this market, from handmade rings, mirrors and tables to homemade pasta and fresh grown organic vegetables.
Even though each year the festival gets bigger and better much of the original atmosphere is retained, due to the mixture of international stars and local notables from Bavaria, Austria and northern Germany.
