Holiday Checklist - What To Do Before You Travel

Going on holiday can be very stressful, so make sure that you have all of documents and travel arrangements sorted before you head off with this "things to do before you travel" checklist.

Three weeks before you travel:

- Confirm the details of your travel arrangements to and from the airport.

- If you are travelling to Europe, ensure that you and all of your party have European Health Insurance Cards, and that all of your details are correct.

- Find out if you or any of your party requires a visa to travel.

- Find out whether vaccinations or medicines are needed and make the necessary appointments.

Two weeks before you travel:

- Purchase a guide book and familiarise yourself with the area that you are staying in and its surrounds.

- Browse the internet for travel advice on the country that you are visiting.

- Order your foreign currency and traveller's cheques if required.

One week before you travel:

- Duplicate your travel documents including insurance policies, hotel confirmations and visas and put them into a second folder. This can then be placed into your hand luggage as a back up, should your original documents go astray.

- Check that you have received all paperwork and any tickets from your travel companies.

Three days before you travel:

- Confirm with friends, family or neighbours security arrangements for you home. This can include giving them a spare key to check the house whilst you are away, or giving them the house alarm details incase of an emergency.

- Leave your contact details for the hotel that you are staying in whilst on holiday with a trusted friend or relative.

- Check baggage weight restrictions for your flight and weight your suitcase to ensure that you are not exceeding the airlines limit.

- Plan your route from home to the airport and check that you have all of the necessary details contact details for you airline and any car parking that you may have arranged.

One day before you travel:

- Confirm your flight times with the airline and check weather conditions so that you can forward plan should there be any delays.

- Prepare some drinks and snacks for the journey.

- Sort out your hand luggage.

- If you intend to drive to the airport, fill the car with petrol and check the general car maintenance - tyre pressures, oil levels etc.

The day of travel:

- Check all electrical appliances are switched off and unplugged in your home, and if it is winter, turn off the water at the mains to ensure they don't freeze and you don't return to burst pipes.

- Securely lock all windows and doors.

- Check the internet or teletext for flight delays/cancellations.

- Put all tickets, passports, visas, money and other travel details into a travel belt or bag to keep the documents with you at all times.
