Get To Know About the African Lions

The African Lions belong to the kingdom animalia, the phylum Chordata, class mammalia, order carnivora, family felidae, and genus Panthera and species Panthera Leo. They are the most famous mammals in Africa. They are very social animals and they live in groups of a few lionesses [5 to 15] and up to 3 males and the cubs. The females in a group are usually related to each other and they never leave a group. The males normally stay in a group for less than three years. They are fought by other males who take over the pride.

The male that has been chased away must find another pride to join or else it might die from hunger. It therefore goes and displaces another dominant male in a group. If a female leaves a group, it might be very hard for it to join another group as all the females in a group are related. The lions are the second largest cats after the tigers and are the tallest cats at the shoulders.

Lions in the wild live for about ten years but that in captivity can live even for twenty years. Males die faster as the constant fighting with each other takes a tore on them. The females are the hunters and the males protect the pride. They are purely carnivores and feast on wildebeests, impalas, gazelles, buffaloes and zebras. Scavengers such as hyenas follow them closely to finish off any meal they leave behind. They mostly eat fresh meat though a weak and dying lion can be found scavenging.
