Bulgarian Ski Resorts Pricier Than Austrian Ones

It has been confirmed that tourism branch will keep the price reasonable for forthcoming winter season 2009/2010. The good news is that hotelkeepers managed to ensure high occupancy rate, commented Tsvetan Tonchev, the chairman of Bulgarian Tourism Chamber. He explained that approximately 5% more foreign tourists have booked their winter holiday in Bulgaria. It is expected that the number of holidaymakers from Russia, Serbia and Macedonia will increase significantly as the ski season 2009/2010 approaches. Naturally Bansko registers the highest occupancy rates, followed by Borovets and Pamporovo.

However, prices in Bulgarias winter season are slightly higher than in Austrian ski resorts. Tour operators commented that currently prices for 7 days in Austrian ski resorts, which opened the new ski season ahead of the schedule, are about 390-400 EUR. One night in 4-star hotel in Bulgarian ski resort may be 95 or 200 EUR.

Rumen Draganov, director of the Institute of Analysis and Assessment in Tourism foresees that most probably the offers would not include average prices. According to him, hotelkeepers and tour operators will offer either cheap vacations or expensive programmes. The majority of tour operators offer a 10% to 20% discount which attracts clients. It is noteworthy that tourists are lured by packages with free extras, especially free night stay in the hotel, discounts for children or exclusive All Inclusive packs.

Finally, representatives of tourism sector pointed out that skiing in Europe is much more expensive than having a winter holiday in Bulgaria.
