Ghana ‘Snow Leopard' plans West Africa ski slope

Ghana Snow Leopard' plans West Africa ski slope

Ghana skiing champion and Olympic skier Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, 36, intends building a ski slope in the tropical West African country. In pursuit of this, he recently launched the bid for financial backing at an event in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, where a model of the slope was on display.

The national champion participated at this year's Vancouver Winter Olympic in January where he came second-to-last. However, his participation in one of the game's top event has convinced Nkrumah-Acheampong that he can build a ski team that can carry on his legacy as he retires from Olympic competition.

Nicknamed the Snow Leopard, he is now looking for sponsors for the new facility. "We are starting from scratch in the depths of the equatorial jungle. We are going to get it done," he said. "I didn't want to see my dream die. The only way to keep it alive is to have a facility in Ghana, something to inspire the youth and get them into skiing."

Nkrumah-Acheampong plans to build the artificial slope on 13 acres of land in Ghana's hilly eastern region. He hopes the initiative will develop skiers for Ghana's national ski team, which will operate the slope. He has already begun scouting for trainees.

He was quoted in media saying: "The best of the best will be taken into the Ghana ski racing team. We are building something for the future." He said he also expected middle-class Ghanaians and expatriates living in Ghana to use the facility. Born in Scotland, Nkrumah-Acheampong grew up in Accra and only learned to ski when he returned to study in Britain.
