Makar Sankranti: The First Festival Of The Year

India is famous for its festivals, among other things. Theres not really a time throughout the year when Indians do not have a festival to look forward to. Even though the major Indian festival season starts during autumn, there are few important festivals that fall during the first half of the year and Makar Sankranti is one of them.

Makar Sankranti is a traditional Hindu festival and is considered the festival of harvest in India. The word Makar signifies the zodiac sign of Capricorn and Makar Sankranti is the time when Sun leaves the zodiac sign of Sagittarius and enters the sign of Capricorn. It is interesting to note that the date of Makar Sankranti somewhat remains the same over the years when the dates of other festivals vary significantly every year. This year Makar Sankranti is on the 14th of January and this major harvest festival would be celebrated with much joy. A common practice for every Indian festival is shopping, of course. Moreover since Makar Sankranti is the first festival of the year, shoppers shop with a fresh new frenzy. Being a traditional festival, most people prefer buying traditional Indian Clothing over fashionable Designer Outfits. Women prefer buying traditional Silk Sarees on this occasion while men opt for ethnic Kurta Pyjama, Churidar Kurta or even Dhoti Kurta. At a time of fashion such as this, even the traditional Indian Clothing havent been spared the much raved about Designer touch. The latest silk Sarees or rather Designer Silk Sarees as they are called nowadays feature the added glamour of embellishments besides the luster of silk. Designer Silk Sarees are available in a variety of silks such as Designer Pure Silk Sarees, Designer Crepe Silk Sarees, Designer Art Silk Sarees, Designer Dupion Silk Sarees, etc and feature ornately embroidered pattern with silk resham and shimmering embellishments along with rich golden zari woven intricate pattern.
