Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, which is at an altitude of 1,496 meters above sea level. It is carved out of Assam. It is a picturesque hill station and offers a good holiday all year round. Shillong is a great destination due to its adequate facilities, scenic beauty, cheerful people, clouds and pines trees, mountains, valleys, meadows and an excellent golf course. Shillong is the base for visiting other places in Meghalaya. Here the climate is hot and humid during summers. Here the monsoons arrive in June and it rains almost the end of August. It is quite cold during winters.

The nearest international airport is Guwahati's Borjhar Airport. From Shillong the distance of this airport is about 128 kilometers.

Rail

Shilong is connected with the rest of the country by rail also. The nearest railway station is Guwahati which is at a distance of 103 kilometers from Shilong.

Road

Shillong is connected with Guwahati by National Highway number 40. Shillong is connected with the neighbouring states with the State Transport buses and the private transport operators. The bus stand is located in the heart of Shillong. So, tourists don't have to face any problem in visiting different places of Shillong as well as to reach Shillong.

Major Tourist Attractions in Shillong

Shillong Peak: It is an ideal picnic spot. It is located at a distance of about 10 kilometers from the main city. It is located at an altitude of 1965 m.

Ward's Lake: It is a beautiful lake which is covered with different and beautiful flowers, plants and trees. It is located in the heart of the city. This spot is very popular for short garden walks and boating.

Botanical Garden: It is famous by the name of Lady Hydari Park. It is a perfect landscape and ablaze with roses and flowers of almost every variety.

Waterfalls: There are many waterfalls in and around this beautiful and small hill station. Some of them are Bishop and Beadon falls, Elephanta Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Crinoline Falls etc. It is famous and rich in having caves too.

Golf Club: It is developed in 1889 as a nine holes course later in 1924 which was converted to an 18 holes course. It is termed as 'Gleneagle of the East', at the United States Golf Association Library and Museum.

Some of the other attractions are State Museum, Lum Nehru Park, Kyllang Rock etc.
