Kids Closet - How to Install an Age Appropriate Closet System

Organizing your child's closet can be a bit more difficult than the other closets in your home. There is a good chance the closet doesn't solely consist of clothing; you are likely to find toys and other items in there as well.

The organizational system you choose will be dependent on the age of your child and you must be prepared to step in and help out with the organization process. If your child is physically capable, encourage him to put his toys and clothes away on a regular basis.

Present to him his storage options and let him help you choose where to keep his items. This gives him a sense of ownership and pride and will help him want to keep things neat and tidy.

The absolute best way to teach your child where things belong is through the use of labels. If your child cannot read yet, use a combination of pictures and words to label drawers, shelves, bins, etc. For example, use a plastic drawer organizer and label the top drawer with the word "TRAIN" alongside a colorful image of a train or train set.

Hanging clothing can be quite tricky for younger children. Placing things on hangers can be difficult as can physically reaching the hanging rod. Consider putting a temporary shelving unit in your child's closet so he has easy access to his clothes. When he gets older, the unit can be removed. By making this process easy for him, he will learn how to get dressed on his own and even put away his own laundry.

Once the new system is installed, work with your child each day to instill the habit of putting things where they belong. As time goes on, he will begin cleaning up each day with little help from you. You may only need to get involved on a weekly basis or less; mainly to make sure everything is staying on track.
