Online Holdem Poker 101

Online Holdem poker is also known as Texas Hold'em or just Holdem. Holdem is just another version or variation of one of the most popular games in the world. Texas Hold'em (which is the basis for the online Holdem poker) takes its name from the US state of Texas.

The game consists basically of two cards which are given to the player face down. Then, there will be what is called five community cards being placed by the dealer. Flop is the name called for the series of three cards while the two additional cards are called the "turn" and the "river." Each time the cards are dealt, the poker player has the option to either check, fold or bet. The betting happens before the flop, the turn or the river.

Texas Hold'em is probably the most popular variation of poker. Online Holdem poker is as popular, if not more, as land-based Texas Hold'em poker. There are many online Holdem poker sites, including a program for beginners in which one does not have to play for money, but can practice the game.

What is the objective of online Holdem poker?

The same as its land-based counterpart, online Holdem poker is a competition in which players contend for a specific amount of money or virtual chips which players have all contributed to or what is known as "pot" money.

The cards that the players get are dealt in a random manner. This means that players do not have control over the cards they will be getting. So, the only control that the player has is to be in charge of how much money will be on the pot, based on the hand which the player holds.

Online Holdem poker is divided into a series of deals or hands. At the end of the hand, one player will be awarded the pot with the exception of draws.

A showdown happens when at the end of a hand, remaining players reveal their cards. The player with the highest hand in a showdown will get the pot. Again, the exception is when there is a tie.

Another conclusion to a hand is when players fold, the remaining player who has not folded will be rewarded the pot.

Winning online Holdem poker is really not to win every individual hand. The real objective of the game is to be able to make the correct mathematical calculations and psychologically apt decisions when it comes to how much you bet, when to fold, and knowing when to raise or call. The better a player is at making these decisions, the better he will last in the series and maximize his long-term winnings.
