How To Best Prepare For Holiday Guests

As the holidays rapidly approach, you may be beginning to stress over the need to accommodate guests--friends, siblings, children, or in-laws (or perhaps all of the above). But with enough planning and the right adjustments, you can ensure that everyone has a pleasant stay they will never forget.

First of all, you obviously need to determine how many people intend to stay in your home. Sometimes we have to make room for more people than will fit in our guest bedroom (or bedrooms), so that is the first key to coming up with a proper strategy.

Remove unnecessary furniture from your living room, spare bedrooms, and any other room that could be used to house guests. This can be done by maximizing space in your garage, using the floors of your closets, or even temporarily renting a storage unit.

Changing up your existing furniture is one of the best ways to give more people comfortable sleeping space. Using daybeds instead of standard twin beds saves space but can still reasonably accommodate two of your guests.

If you don't already have at least one sofa-bed, then you may want to consider investing in the replacement of at least one of your couches. Full recliners may be helpful as well.

If you do not have enough guest bedrooms to handle all of your visitors, you will want to purchase one or two inflatable mattresses. These must be plugged into a wall outlet to be filled, and sometimes the inflation is somewhat noisy, so make sure this is done before everyone goes to bed to avoid disturbing anyone.

If you happen to already own an air mattress or two, inspect them for leaks and patch these up before your guests arrive. Be sure to have pillows (at least two) ready to be supplied for each of your visitors--don't rely on decorative throw pillows, as these are not usually comfortable.

Consider the special needs of any incoming family members or friends. Again, this may involve in investing in some new furniture. Adjustable beds can help a variety of conditions, particularly people with certain sleep disorders, varicose veins, and the elderly. Plus they are tremendously comfortable, so you can always use it after your company departs!

In almost every family, there is at least one person with an allergy to animal dander. That means that you need to designate a particular room for that person and clean it thoroughly before their arrival--and then keep your pets out of that room until their stay is over. Try to minimize their contact with the pets by keeping them in the yard or in your own bedroom.

Having guests for the holidays can cause some stressful preparation time, but some investments can make future visits smoother and more pleasant for everyone involved. And during the holidays, that is most crucial--so you can make memories to last a lifetime.
