Tips on travelling with a 6 year old

When we were considering whether motorhome hire was the right option for us we found ourselves considering all the different ways in which something could go wrong.

Would six year old Tom like it? - he loves camping so it can only be an improvement ....

Would we know how everything works - we'd get a full induction handover from Lazee Dayz ......

Would it be difficult to drive - Lazee Dayz would give us lots of hints and tips and if we're careful we should be fine and we'd get used to it easily enough .....

In practice none of these things was an issue like we'd expected. Tom found it the most exciting thing ever of course. A bed with a ladder, a real bathroom with a most fascinating toilet mechanism, a fridge for treats; how good could it get!. With a large choice of motorhomes for hire we luckily chose the right one.

As for us, we did manage to work out what all the switches and buttons meant and to get everything functioning as it should. Driving the motorhome off initially was a little worrying but we stuck to the advice about the passenger always getting out to help with reversing and other manoeuvres and this made us so much more confident about managing a vehicle of this size.

Only one thing went wrong and that could never have been anticipated in advance. On squeezing a tube of tomato puree into the spaghetti bolognese, the back end exploded leaving a trail of tomato across the kitchen .... and more so across the cook! Now that's one thing we didn't plan for or worry about in advance! Following much hilarity from the non cooks (the cook didn't find it so funny) we managed to clean up all traces on tomato and I'm sure the motorhome rental company found no trace of it on our return.
