subject: How To Be An La Dentist [print this page]

When you say Los Angeles, the first thing that comes to your mind is media and entertainment. Nevertheless, the city is not only good in media production and Hollywood entertainment; they also have a proficient pool of dentists. Drive along the citys highways, and you will see various dental clinics. These clinics are served by professional dentists.

Dentists in LA have different specialties. There are seven specialty fields in dentistry: orthodontics, periodontics, dental public health, endodontics, pediatrics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and prosthodontics. In the oral and maxillofacial field, dentists choose between pathology, radiology, and surgery. General dentistry is the mother field of all specializations. Students obtain a medical undergraduate program before entering a dental school, taking at least four years.

General dentists have a title of DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine). Before professional practice, they undergo further screening and examination. These are administered by the American association of dentists. Licensure examination for dentistry has two phases: national board exam and regional board exam. Both exams permit them to build dental clinics in their city, albeit their license is valid only in the state. Hence, they cannot practice dentistry in other states.

Those who want to specialize in a field undergo post-graduate education. Post-graduate education takes at least four more years. On the other hand, DDSs and DMDs immediately plunge into the field, practicing dentistry in national hospitals and private clinics. An LA dentist who practices in national hospitals is called a public dentist, while those who practice in private clinics are called private dentists. Private dentists charge a higher cost for dental treatments. Nevertheless, they provide cost-efficient and high-quality dental services.

A DMD LA dentist provides preventive treatments to patients. Preventive treatments ensure proper dental functions and oral hygiene. General dentists provide basic dental treatments. These include teeth whitening, cleaning, and bleaching. They also perform basic restorative procedures like porcelain veneers and tooth extraction. They conduct oral cancer screening and gum disease diagnosis, although they refer these problems to more specialized dentists for further treatment.

On the other hand, a specialty LA dentist performs complex dental surgeries. Cosmetic dentists administer smile make-over treatments. A smile make-over enhances the functionality and appearance of teeth. This surgery improves the smile quality of a person. Dentists undergo rigorous exams and trainings before being properly licensed. Through these, they can properly administer treatments and surgeries to patients.
