Follicle Treatments for Baldness

Scientists have been busy researching ways to stop baldness and promote hair growth. There have been many interesting findings that have come out especially on the hair follicles. Because of better understanding of the follicles, there has been a development of treatments targeted at stopping the damage of follicles and the promotion of their growth.

The hair follicle is an integral part of the skin. It is found all over the body except on the palms and soles of the feet. The follicle is for the growth of hair especially on the scalp. At the base of the follicle is the matrix which contains the cells of the hair. Hair cells are some of the fastest growing cells found in the body. Cell growth is regulated by the papilla which is encased in the matrix. Hair grows in different stages. The stage of active hair growth is termed the anagen stage. There is fast division of cells which cause the growing of the hair shaft. The hair goes into a stage where the old hair is pushed out and replaced by the new hair. This stage is the exogen stage. The catagen is the next stage during which the follicle regresses. The follicle than goes into a resting stage where there is no cell division activity, the telogen stage. The period taken by the cycle depends on genetics as well as the environment.

Hair is shed everyday and this is a normal process. Baldness occurs when the hair follicles go into the telogen stage for a long period of time. Hair continues to be shed whilst there are no new hairs to replace the old ones. Follicles treatments for baldness are now available on the market. Some are more permanent than others but all are more or less very effective.

Laser therapy has been on the rise as a baldness treatment. It is desired by many people because there are no drugs that one has to take on a daily basis. It also does not leave any visible marks or scars. This treatment tickles the follicles which respond by moving from the telogen stage into the anagen stage. Head massages are also favoured by a lot of people. The oils used, as well as the action of massaging, stimulates the follicles into action and cell division starts over again.

There are now more modern techniques that are employed. The transplanting of the hair follicles have been evolving for a very long time, but has been modified such that there are no big ugly scars to be seen. Transplantation involves removing follicles from an area referred to as the donor site to the area where baldness is evidenced. This area is called the recipient site. A small strip of skin is removed from the donor site on the scalp. The follicles are then divided up individually. The follicles are inserted in sets of 1 to 4 strands, referred to as follicular units. Minoxidil is another treatment that can be used to find baldness. With all these follicle treatments for baldness, there is no reason to have a shiny spot on the head.
