subject: Clothes Shopping Tips For Parents [print this page]

For many people, the prospect of shopping for kids clothes is nightmarish, even without the kids in tow; there are so many considerations to take into account: what should be an extremely simple task becomes exceedingly difficult. When you put the kids into the equation, you know that it will not be the ideal way to spend family time. Here we offer some great tips to help you to get through the nigh-on impossible task of clothes shopping with your kids.

Never think that you are the only one that dreads shopping for kids clothes, ask anyone who has ever been to a shopping centre, and they will have sympathy for you, and completely understand your plight. After all, we have all seen children throwing tantrums in clothes shops, perhaps we even threw a few tantrums ourselves when we were kids, and I certainly remember many a family arguments around the issue of clothes. Nonetheless, there are tactics that you can employ to ensure that a shopping trip goes as smoothly as possible. These tips will not transform a shopping trip into a holiday, but they will reduce the pressure.

People tend to get grouchy if they have not eaten; this is true of adults and kids alike. Make sure that you are all well fed before you leave the house. This will reduce your own stress levels, as well as those of your children so if they do throw a tantrum you will be better prepared for it.

Outline a schedule of what you expect to achieve on your shopping trip. Tell your kids which shops you will be visiting, the type of clothes you are expecting to buy, and the timescale that you expect the shopping trip to take.

If you have very small children, allow them to bring along something to keep them occupied, for example their favourite book or their favourite toy.

Bribery is generally frowned upon in our culture, but not when it comes to making sure that the kids behave themselves. Promise your kids a reward if they manage to behave well throughout the shopping trip.

Get your child excited about shopping by getting them to help with the task. A great way of doing this is to write them out their own personal shopping list, tell them that they need to find all the items on the list and turn it into a game, much like a treasure hunt. Bring along some stickers, so that each item they manage to mark-off their list, is rewarded with a fun sticker.

Keep shopping trips as short as possible. Generally, each trip should last no longer than an hour and a half. Children have a lot less patience than adults do and less stamina too, they are more easily bored and tire out quickly, after an hour, their attention will begin to wane.

If you simply cannot face a shopping trip, use the internet instead. There are some fantastic kids clothes retailers online, the internet has a lot more choice than the shopping centre.
