Travel to Cairo in Egypt

The British withdrew from Egypt for over fifty years ago, but they are still remembered here. Cairo in Egypt was founded in 969 by the Fatimid commander Gawhar as-Siqilli al-Rumi on the place of the ruined fortress of Babylon. The first was the district which is now known as Islamic Cairo. Later, nearby on the hillside Mokattam, a citadel was built. Gradually growing, the city absorbed in the south an ancient Coptic settlement, now it is a district of Old Cairo. In 1870's the central district downtown was rebuilt. Each of these parts of the city has its unique appearance. The downtown continues its colonial existence, in which a combination of Middle Eastern flavor and characteristics of European culture are whimsical and sometimes paradoxical. Midan Tahrir is the central square of Cairo in Egypt. There are two buildings near it monuments of complicated relations within the diplomatic triangle: Egypt-USA-USSR. The buildings are very different from each other. One of them is a classic European construction: The American University of Cairo. It was founded in 1919 to promote "intellectual development of the peoples of the Middle East and Egypt" and improve the attitude of the whole Arab world to America. The 14 floors giant of Mugamma contrasts to the white and light university building. It was erected in 1960 by Soviet builders as a gift, as a sign of friendship. Mugamma is a symbol of the bureaucracy for Cairo in Egypt.
