When in doubt, investigate your options for prostate treatment

Choosing a prostate cancer treatment can be a daunting affair, but if you look investigate your options, you can make a better informed decision on which treatment is best for you.

The first prostate treatment many doctors will recommend is not actually a treatment at all, because, paradoxically, an initial diagnosis does not mean that you should begin a course of treatment immediately. Many doctors will suggest what is called "watchful waiting", which means that the patient undergoes a series of tests over a period of time to monitor the progress of the disease. Often it is necessary to wait, because the progress of the prostate cancer can be slow in some patients, and may not need to be treated.

In more severe cases, prostate surgery may be necessary. Removal of the prostate, or prostatectomy, is procedure in which a surgeon must physically remove the prostate. In many cases removal of the prostate is necessary if the urethra becomes obstructed because of enlargement of the prostate.

Within the surgical solution there is a variety of treatments, including radical retropubic prostatectomy, radical perineal prostatectomy, and suprapubic transvesical prostatectomy, and laser surgery. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, and tests can help you and your doctor decied on the best course.
